Revenue after discounts and product sales reversals, excluding collected taxes and duties; use the selected orders and period.

Shipping charged to customers less shipping discounts/refunds, excluding taxes. Do not enter delivery costs here.

Product costs attributable to these sales, adjusted consistently for recoverable returned inventory; not all purchases.

Carrier, pick/pack and packaging costs that vary with these orders.

Transaction, commission and processing expenses net of fee reversals; avoid duplicating other expenses.

Order-related campaign/acquisition costs allocated consistently. Fixed salaries belong in fixed expenses.

Other costs that vary with this order cohort, such as unrecovered return handling, not already entered.

The period's allocated rent, salaries, software and relevant depreciation or other fixed expenses. Exclude items entered above.

Use a positive whole count of matching eligible orders, not new customers or units.

Formula

Net revenue = net product revenue + net shipping revenue. Variable costs = COGS + fulfillment + fees + attributable variable marketing + other variable costs. Contribution = net revenue − variable costs. Estimated operating profit = contribution − allocated fixed operating expenses. Per-order amounts = period amounts ÷ orders. Operating margin = estimated operating profit ÷ net revenue × 100.

How to use this calculation

2,000 net product revenue + 100 shipping revenue − (800 COGS + 200 fulfillment + 60 fees + 240 marketing) = 800 contribution, or 8 across 100 orders. Subtract 300 fixed expenses to estimate 500 operating profit, or 5 per order.

  • Use one reporting period, one currency and the same order cohort for revenue, COGS, variable expenses, fixed allocation and count. Revenue is already net of discounts and reversals: do not subtract refunds twice. Collected taxes/duties are excluded, and recoverable inventory/fee credits must be handled consistently.
  • Contribution covers fixed expenses before profit. This operating-profit estimate excludes financing, income tax, non-operating items and any unentered costs; it is not guaranteed net profit, cash flow or an accounting filing. Fixed expense allocation can substantially affect per-order comparisons; marketing allocations are estimates rather than channel attribution.
  • Negative contribution or profit is a valid loss output. Zero revenue leaves the margin undefined, while zero orders makes per-order metrics undefined. The break-even revenue per order simply covers the entered costs at the entered order volume, assuming the same cost amounts; it is not a break-even order-volume forecast.
