- Demand during lead time
- 140 units
- Reorder point
- 200 units
- Inventory position
- 130 units
- Position above / below trigger
- -70 units
- Replenishment review
- At or below trigger — review replenishment
Formula
Lead-time demand = daily demand × lead-time days. Reorder point = lead-time demand + safety stock. Inventory position = on hand + on order − backorders.
How to use this calculation
20 units/day × 7 days + 60 safety units = a 200-unit reorder point. With 120 on hand, 20 on order and 10 committed, the inventory position is 130 units.
- Trigger review when inventory position reaches or falls below the threshold. The result is a trigger, not a recommended order quantity.
- The threshold is rounded up to whole units. Incoming inventory must arrive in time; seasonal demand or uncertain lead times can require a different policy.
- The calculation is a planning estimate, not an automated purchasing instruction. No order is placed.
